Over the generations, there has been one block on the property, that was given the name Money Garden. The patch of Cabernet Sauvignon is where, over many years, many coins have been found. There have been many different people who have worked the vines throughout the years and have been lucky to find a Lost Penny.

Vintage Notes

The 2022 vintage growing season was average. The 2021 winter was the wettest recorded since 1996. October and November saw rainfall totals above average. Together with a rainfall event in February assisted in refreshing up the vines leading into harvest. This vintage was filled with some highs and lows for the other growers affected by hail, which we felt deeply.

Winemaking Notes

Colour: Dark deep red with a garnet hue
Nose: Sweet cinnamon, blackcurrant and touch of leafy tonnes.
Palate: A fine and elegant structure with mouth-filling intense berry fruits. Rich, earthy, leafy notes give a complex structure.

The 2020 Lost Penny Money Garden Cabernet Sauvignon has an overall sweet, spiced nose and
palate with an elegant structure and full mouth feel of rich berry and leafy characters. This wine will
continue to evolve over many years with careful cellaring.

Expovina Wine Trophy 2023 – Gold Medal

Deep, bold red-purple colour with a dep-set cassis aroma. Fruit-driven and fresh, with crushed-leaf and cedar overtones. The palate is intense and fresh again, with a little stemminess that suggests some less-ripe fruit in the mix. It's very intense, fresh, and varietal and promises more if cellared. 2024–2033. - 91 Points, Huon Hook - The Real Review

An Ebenezer-grown cabernet sauvignon, deep crimson in the glass with plush and pure blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. Lot's of northern Barossa fruit depth here with some lovely forest tones, fruit cake spices, blackcurrant pastille, tobacco and cedary/vanillin oak tones. Full bodied and opulent with just a touch of Luxardo cherry 'twang' on the exit; tannins fine and sporting a real créme de cassis feel. - 90 Points, Dave Brookes - Halliday Wine Companion

2020 Vintage Reviews

Leading with a fruity nose of red and blackberries and raspberries the core has prominent vanilla flavours. This is round and ripe with freshness but lacks a little nuance. - 85 Points, Gabrielle Poy - The Real Review

Ebenezer-grown cabernet sauvignon from Carol and Nick Riebke. Bright, vibrant crimson in the glass with characters of blackberry, red cherry and blackcurrant, some leafy herbal tones fluttering on the edges with hints of dark spice, licorice, eucalyptus and earth. Light blackcurrant pastille notes on the palate with compact, fine sandy tannins, bright acidity and a tangy, black-fruited exit. - 89 Points, Dave Brooks - Halliday Wine Companion

2019 Vintage Reviews

From respected northern Barossa grape growers Carol and Nick Riebke, this Ebenezer cabernet sauvignon provides crisply formed, bright red-fruited drinking in a medium-bodied framework. Red plum, cherry and redcurrant fruits mesh with baking spice, red licorice and softly spoken oak nuance here, with a liminal, leafy, sappy edge further in the background. Light, sapid acidity and fine sandy tannin support wrap things up. - 90 Points - David Brookes - Halliday Wine Companion

Deepish, slightly advanced ruby colour with almost all the purples gone. The bouquet has a tomato and tamarillo note, a little earthiness and a hint of eucalyptus. It’s medium to fullbodied and has plenty of flavour, the mouth-feel pleasant if a touch gritty, and the finish is tangy but clean and minty. - 87 Points - Huon Hook - The Real Review

2018 Vintage Reviews

From an estate vineyard in Ebenezer, matured 18 months in French oak barrels. Medium purple red. Ripe black/redcurrant and cherry fruit is accented by varietal notes of leaf and capsicum. French oak lends both nutty dark chocolate backing and firm, fine tannin structure, sitting disjoint currently but all in the right places for medium-term development. It concludes with even line and length. - 90 Points, Tyson Stelzer - Halliday Wine Companion
