Someone once told us to plant Montepulciano “Monty” – “it would be fun!” It has been more than fun; it has become one of the most challenging grape varieties we have grown. It tends to be very immature, and it takes a lot of time to become an adult. It ripens later than all our other varieties, forcing us to sit back and wait and wait to finish our vintage.

Vintage Notes
The 2022 vintage growing season was average. The 2021 winter was the wettest recorded since 1996. October and November saw rainfall totals above average. Together with a rainfall event in February assisted in refreshing up the vines leading into harvest. This vintage was filled with some highs and lows for the other growers affected by hail, for which we felt deeply.
Winemaker Notes
Colour: Dark deep red with a garnet hue
Nose: Black cherry, dark plum and spice
Palate: A fine and elegant structure with mouth-filling, intense dark fruit characters. Fine tannins to give a little bit more complexity.
Despite the challenge for us to ripen, Monty has become something amazing to have included in our range of wines. The overall sweet black fruit character and spice, together with a lighter palate weight, give a wine that is elegantly structured.

Barossa Wine Show 2024 – Bronze Medal
Northern Barossa-sourced montepulciano matured in seasoned French oak for 12 months. I like the sense of calm that this wine exudes. All ripe, juicy plum and morello cherry cut with spice, cola and purple florals with just a scattering of herbs. Savoury and stony on the palate with a bright seam of acidity nudging it along. Good drinking. - 92 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion.
Aromas of dried herbs, rose petal, raspberry and cherry. There's lovely flesh and lift on the palate, really bright and lively. Blue fruits and spice are at play and the tannins and acidity bring texture and zing. There's a nice lick of creamy oak in there as well, bringing mouth-feel and length. - 90 Points, Aaron Brasher – The Real Review

Northern Barossa-sourced montepulciano matured in seasoned French oak for 12 months. Bright, purple-edged crimson in the glass, there is a real stony, savoury sense of composure about this wine. Plenty of red cherry and plummy notes with underlying tones of red licorice, earth, soft spice and purple florals, the tannins are powdery and fine and the acidity cuts a brisk pace, finishing with a flow of sour red cherry and spice. - 90 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion.
Notes of raisins and blueberries lead into a refreshing mid-palate. It's a restrained style of montepulciano, acidity framing the fruit. - 86 Points, Gabrielle Poy - The Real Review

Ripe and burly notes of licorice and black plums make way for a palate that is gloriously ripe, sweet-fruited and spiced. This is one for the hedonists; it's rich and very welcoming. Fine tannins on the finish lasso the fruit and give structure to the ample wine.

Northern Barossa, estate-grown montepulciano aged in seasoned French oak for 18 months. Deep purple-red colour, with bright plummy notes cut with spice, espresso and violets. There is a youthful exuberance and sense of rawness to this wine; like a horse about to bolt and chomping on its bit. It provides great fruit-pure drinking and enjoyment with a bouncy fruit drive.
