Someone once told us to plant Montepulciano “Monty” – “it would be fun!” It has been more than fun; it has become one of the most challenging grape varieties we have grown. It tends to be very immature and takes a lot of time to become an adult, and it ripens later than all our other varieties forcing us to sit back and wait before we can finish our vintage. This is the second vintage we have made our Monty, and it’s only now that we have found true pleasure in this variety and can see how amazing it is.

Tasting Note

Alcohol

13.5% vol

Barrel Maturation

Barrel Maturation: matured in seasoned French oak barrel for 12 months.

Vintage Notes

Following two particularly dry seasons, our figures were crossed that the 2021 vintage would be much kinder. Conditions through summer were relatively mild with cool mornings and maximum temperatures below 30°C for majority of January provided optimal ripening conditions. The quality was exceptional with reds having intense, rich, and balanced flavours and colours.

Winemaker Notes

Colour: Dark deep red with a garnet hue
Nose: black cherry, dark plum and spice.
Palate: A fine and elegant structure with mouth filling intense dark fruit characters. Fine tannins to give a little bit more complexity.

Monty despite it challenge for us to ripen has become something amazing which we cannot wait to share with you. The overall sweet black fruit character and spice together with a palate that is elegantly structured makes this wine something special.

Aromas of dried herbs, rose petal, raspberry and cherry. There's lovely flesh and lift on the palate, really bright and lively. Blue fruits and spice are at play and the tannins and acidity bring texture and zing. There's a nice lick of creamy oak in there as well, bringing mouth-feel and length.

Notes of raisins and blueberries lead into a refreshing mid-palate. It's a restrained style of montepulciano, acidity framing the fruit.

2020 Vintage Reviews

Ripe and burly notes of licorice and black plums make way for a palate that is gloriously ripe, sweet-fruited and spiced. This is one for the hedonists; it's rich and very welcoming. Fine tannins on the finish lasso the fruit and give structure to the ample wine.

Northern Barossa, estate-grown montepulciano aged in seasoned French oak for 18 months. Deep purple-red colour, with bright plummy notes cut with spice, espresso and violets. There is a youthful exuberance and sense of rawness to this wine; like a horse about to bolt and chomping on its bit. It provides great fruit-pure drinking and enjoyment with a bouncy fruit drive.
