The name Lost Penny was born after we received a huge surprise when we found an old coin in our vineyard. After many years of being in the dirt, the first coin we found was an 1891 Penny. It amazes us how we could still read the date on the coin after so many years of hiding underground. It was only fitting that we would name this extraordinary wine in honour of the year in which the first coin helped shape our new adventure.

Vintage Notes
The 2022 vintage growing season was average. The 2021 winter was the wettest recorded since 1996. October and November saw rainfall totals above average. Together with a rainfall event in February assisted in refreshing up the vines leading into harvest. This vintage was filled with some highs and lows for the other growers affected by hail, which we felt deeply for.
Winemaker's Notes
Colour: Dark deep red with a garnet core
Nose: Rich dark red fruits with intense sweet oak
Palate: A full and complex structure with mouth filling intense black fruits. Rich sweet oak spice giving a round, full and complex structure.
Overall, this wine is still young, and with careful cellaring, it has the capacity to develop further complex flavours. The 2022 Lost Penny 1891 Penny Shiraz has an overall full, intense nose and palate with an elegant, rich structure built around mouth-filling berry characters.

Old-vine northern Barossa shiraz from Nick and Carol Riebke in Ebenezer; matured 18 months in new French oak. Deep crimson with aromas of blackberries, macerated plums and boysenberry studded with hints of baking spices, 'Old Jamaican' chocolate, earth and sweet oak. Full bodied, the oak ratcheting up in volume on the palate with dense black fruits, grilled figs, prunes and layers of spice. Lovely colour, deep, dark and youthful. Big-time aromas of stewed plum, sweet oak, mocha, spice, prune and cedar. Sweet, dark fruited and juicy. There's a real whack of plummy flavour here. The fruit is a little over-ripe and jubey, with the tannins and acidity doing their best to provide some structure and definition. Deep to opaque ruby-red core. A nose of blackberry jam, chocolate and vanilla bean. Big and rich. Loaded with jammy black fruits and oak-driven chocolate and vanilla notes. The tannins are present but are not bold enough to balance the onslaught of ripeness. Old-vine northern Barossa shiraz from Nick and Carol Riebke in Ebenezer; matured 18 months in new French oak. Deep crimson in the glass with aromas of bold black fruits and cassis with hints of blackstrap licorice, dark chocolate, deep spice, earth and violet top notes. Deep, dark ruby core, slightly faded into the rim. A nose of dark chocolate, wood shavings and confit black fruits. The palate is big and rich, layered oak spice with concentrated fruits abound. The tannins are hidden by the fruit's exuberance but do dry the finish giving clarity and contrast. The alcohol is warm but sits in harmony with the context of this wine.
